Updates on the Knuckleheads Winter Recreation Area Project - Dec, 2002

The project has taken on a life of it own and is coming along very nicely. With the participation of various individuals, volunteer groups, user groups, government agencies and private companies it has demonstrated the community spirit that is thriving in Powell River.  Work Party photo album.

The latest progess:

  • Request for funding was submitted to the Regional District of Powell River and again it was denied.

  • Dec 8, the cabin is basically finished inside and out and there is not any snow yet. Two vanities were donated, one by Woodworks and the other by Valley Building Supplies.

  • Nov 23, 24 weekend, interior siding finished, pellet stove installed, outside deck and skirt in place, the coolest outhouse installed. Valley Building Supplies donated 20 bags of wood pellet, thanks Ron!

  • All exterior work completed Nov. 9, four weekends after the work started.

  • Big work party Oct 18, 19 with the participation of Powell River Rotary Club and many individuals. Every weekend (rain or shine) that followed saw many more individuals coming up to help.

  • The construction of the cabin started on the Thanksgiving weekend.

  • The material was transported up to the site on Oct 5, 6 weekend.

  • The cabin site has been moved to the top of A910 because of easier accessibility for the transportation of material, equipment and crew.

  • A outhouse will be lifted onto the site by helicopter July 25, Thursday. Contact Gerard or Jeff.

  • The precutting of lumber is complete. Thanks to the Rotary Club. All the material has been stacked into bundles suitable for lifting by helicopter.

  • The prefabrication of the cabin is coming along well, Rotary Club has work parties on Thursday evening and Sunday morning at the Forestry back yard on Duncan. Work parties are no more than 2 hours long and everyone is welcomed.

  • Following a presentation to the Rotary Club of Powell River, it was decided at their director's meeting on Feb 13, 2002 to support the request for assistance and the Rotary Club of Powell River is prepared at this time to commit to the construction of the second cabin. The coordinator on behalf of the club for this project will be Mr. Charlie Gatt.

  • Regional District turned down the proposal citing that the project is unimportant.

  • PRCU donated $75 on Jan 9, 2002.

  • On Dec 10, the Friends of the Knuckleheads delegation led by Eagle Walz of PRPAWS, along with Shannon Hanson of Sliammon First Nation, Ron Diprose, a volunteer who also works for Forest Service, Dr. Andy Davis, Carol Hamilton of the PR Visitors Bureau and over 30 other supporters, appeared before the Municipal Council to show their support for the Project. The large turnout and pleads from the Friends, along with a letter of support from Sonny Rioux of IWA 2171, convinced the Council members to unanimously approve the granting of  $8,000 GIA  towards the project. A big Thanks to the Mayor and all the Councillors for their support and Thanks to Eagle and all the supporters! Now the project can proceed!

  • A similar proposal was also submitted to the Regional District and will be reviewed in January at the Rural Service meeting.

  • The proposal was submitted to the Special Grant-in-Aid committee at the municipality in November, the GIA committee made the recommendation to the Finance committee to grant $8,000 to the project. The motion was defeated by a vote of 3-2 (Mayor and Gablehouse for, Storry, Gemmel and Misner against). We will keep trying.

  • This proposal will be presented to the Municipality and the Regional District of Powell River for additional funding towards the purchase of hardwares, fixtures, etc.

  • Jackson Cedar Products is processing the logs into specification lumber. The finished product is estimated to be close to 4,500 board-feet, more than enough for the construction of the second cabin. The material will be stored at the Ministry of Forest storage yard over the winter. The plan is to precut this material for the fabrication of the second cabin (20'x16') in the spring next year, the material will then be flown into the designated site, and assembled on site.

  • John Krakalovich donated his time to deliver the logs to the sawmill.

  • Darren Brown of Kip Brown Trucking donated the truck for hauling the logs.

  • Stillwater Division of Weyerhauser has donated a truckload of logs towards the building of the second cabin.

  • Trail clearing is on-going. Two groups from Sliammon First Nation with the support of Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks  (E-Team) and HRDC have been helping with maintaining old trails and making new trails.

  • User group has also been helping with trail clearing.
